How much could I get for a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am?

This is my first car and I would like to acquire a car note to better establish my credit so I was thinking about selling this car. It's a 1994 Pontiac Grand AM with a V4 engine. New battery, new radiator, and also new catlytic convertic. Great condition. About 148K on it. Timing belt, trans, alternator and everything have been checked. I even got the oil changed lol. How much do you think I could get for this? How much could I get for a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am?If the body is perfect, you might get $1000.

A reasonable credit rating can be established by a number of cost free indicators; such as length of employment, having a checking account, time at residence, bills paid on time %26amp;/or using a credit card then paying the balance every month. Financing something, then paying the interest over time is a terribly expensive way to get a rating %26amp; it ties up your money, even if your circumstances change; not a good idea.

When you earn a dollar you鈥檙e lucky to get 80 cents, but when you save a dollar you get the whole dollar. Worse, you pay back swollen financed whole dollars with earned shrunken dollars. So it pays better to work at saving on expenses than it does to just work for money.

It doesn't have a V4 engine. It has an inline 4. A 14 year old Grand Am. with 150k on it? $1,000 tops, if it's in otherwise good shape.

Timing belt on a 1997 Mazda MPV?

I just spoke with Kendall Mazda service rep. to see how much it cost to replace the timing belt and he told me that the timing belt is metal and does not need replacing as long as I do regular oil changes. What????Timing belt on a 1997 Mazda MPV?you need to call that dealer back and thank him for being so honest, which most dealers are not, which is why they get such a bad rap.your car has a timing chain not a belt which you will never have to replace unless you have a catastrophic engine failure.if that happens the chain will be the least of your problems.
Timing belt on a 1997 Mazda MPV?
It's a chain, and you should thank him for being honest. The info is in your owners manual maintenance schedule. You don't have to worry about the chain until it's making quite a racket. You'll hear it if and when it happens.

The only remedy is to rebuild the engine.
Get a rebuilt motor, no reason to rebuild this one, 1000 for the motor, 700-1000 to put it in?

  • Suzuki X-90 owners how much should I spend?

I love the way the car looks. Im young and it will be mah first car. How much should i spend on the car? Besides ebay where can I find one? The power windows go out, and I should change the timing belt any other advice. If mah luck on finding a x90 fails what else has that look besides the geo tracker....Im not so into the Rav4.

If you dont like the car thats nice but I dont care. Im looking for replys from current owners or previous owners only.

Links to personal pics Welcome! They are soooo cuteSuzuki X-90 owners how much should I spend?I bought my wife one about 6 weeks ago. She Loves it. Its not what you would call a luxury car. It is built a lot like a geo. You will fill all the bumps and here allot of noise. BUT!!! They are a blast to drive. There is not allot of them on the road so we always are getting asked what it is. If you can work on it yourself, Its not to bad to have one. I have rebuilt most of the car to make sure it is very reliable. Parts are not real easy to get but with the right people helping you its not to bad. I did alot of running to the wrecking yard. We bought one for under $1,000. But put much more into it. They blue book and sell on eBay for around 3,000 or more. Email us if you have any more questions or need some Pics and Ideas. Voooooooooom. Good Luck.
Suzuki X-90 owners how much should I spend?
Ignore almost everything you read about the X-90. The know-it-alls did the same thing to the Corvair and the Edsel. I have a '97 X-90 and, knowing the capabilities of the vehicle, it is a really fun, reliable and economical little car. The critics compare(d) it to other cars and that's where they went wrong. The car is unique. The frame is as strong as a mini truck frame; the engine is bullet proof; the transmission could haul down a building; the electronics are good; the suspension(given its wheel base) is solid -- there is nothing wrong with this car. I cruise mine on the highway at 72-75 miles an hour and, unless its raining, with the T-tops off. But, knowing its limits is necessary. With almost no weight on the rear wheels drive in 4-wheel configuration in snow or any slippery conditions. Be aware of the car's weight in cross winds and stay away from the big trucks. Because of the engine's size keep the RPMs over 2500 in any gear and its as capable as any other 4 cylinder engine. If you need any other infomation just write me a note and let me know. If you want pics I have them. Mick

36000 miles for the 1.8, endura diesel, cost depends on what motor is fitted.
Is it time to change the cam belt? on my ford escort?
when was the last time it was changed? Its kinda difficult to answer since you dont give enough details
from 拢200. its up to you if car seems fine, why fix it. i thinks this is all a big scam.

but for peace of mind, you could have it replaced,
60,000 is a good time to change , they break shortly after
your a lucky man, they shoul be changed at 36,ooo miles
36 is not correct, that for CVH, your zetec should have one around 65-70k or every 5 years.

personally i'd get it changed for piece of mind along with the tensioner.
its time to change it now as for a price you dont give enough information such as engine size, type cvh or zetec.
in most cases yes, it's time to do it. they aren't valve benders so it's not mandatory.

Timing belt cost for 1998 Grand Am- Brother refuses responsibility?

I just got a new car spent my savings on it-a four door for my new daughter it was working mint driving perfect until i went to my brothers house and he parked the car but he reversed and while doing so changed to drive while the car was moving and now it won't start.20 hrs of trouble shooting we know it is the timing belt. is it his fault like i presume (cause he refuses to help fix or pay for the belt), how much does the belt cost and how hard will it be to change it on my driveway-by my boyfriend. And if anyone knows how much it would be to get done at a shop that would be nice. And is it possible the guy I bought the car from knew it was going to break so he sold it? the car is automatic transmissionTiming belt cost for 1998 Grand Am- Brother refuses responsibility? The previous owner was innocent. Does the car have over 100K miles on it? (probably quite a bit more than that...if I'm right). Replacing the timing belt IS NOT EASY. You've got to take off the whole front of the engine. Radiator, Water pump, on and on. Then you've got to put it on right, put it all together, then start it up. It's pretty labor intensive. Unless your boyfriend is very good, I wouldn't have him attempt it. You'll be down for a long time. LONG TIME. It could end your relationship.

It's best to take it to a garage. Call around. Best to use the small independent garages. Look around. The best independents are like good restaurants...lots of cars in the lot. OKAY...the part you want to know and should be afraid to hear the answer of...you'll be about $800-$900 for that one. Independents are generally a little cheaper v. some of the big garages that one have one real mechanic and a bunch of guys that just got out tech school. Good luck kid. Tough break.

that is a fairly normal repair for a car depending on now many miles are on it. It will be a few hundered dollars. Your brother is not really at fault for it because it would have happened inevitably. He just happened to be the one driving.

On most vehicles it's recommended to change the timing belt at approx 60 - 75000 miles, so it was about due anyway. Average price for replacement (in So. Calif) is $ 125 parts %26amp; labor. Shop around if you are going to buy just the belt for the best price. Time ways may be 1 1/2 to 3 hours for a DIY
yes timing belts have a scheduled service life. its part of a cars overall maintainence. it was just due. If ur boyfriend is mechanically incline or has a couple buddies to help. its not a huge undertaking HE would probably want to purchase a service manual though... i would.
The seller could only have guessed that it was %26quot;time%26quot; for the belt to go, I doubt anyone could have known. They just %26quot;do%26quot;.

I'd think twice about letting your brother drive your car if he shifts forward to reverse without stopping, or vice/versa.

Boyfriend could do timing belt change if he's reasonably competent, and I'd say brother should help, just for his carelessness.

It's an all-day (or three) job, so go and buy a Chilton's or Hayne's to prepare for the job, and follow step-by-step.
If it was a simple reverse to drive change, I doubt it was a fault of the driver. The engine doesn't go backwards just because the cars in reverse. Its more likely to damage the transmission. As for the timing belt, that depends in the type of engine you have. If you have a 6 cyl, 3100 engine, it has gears and a chain. If you have the dual overhead cam engine, you have a belt and that could be about a 8 out of 10 to fix in a driveway. Special alignment tools needed to keep cams straight while setting belt to proper alignment. Now if he floored it from reverse to drive, it may have taken the belt out. Tough call on that one.
GM uses timing chains, not belts so that is not your problem. Even if it had a belt there is no way you can cause it to fail doing what you described. That an only be a transmission problem.

How much cost to service a 2003 gti turbo oil changes?

i want to buy a 2003 volkswagen gti turbo and i want to find out how much will cost to service timing belt and oil changes tks if some body can help tksHow much cost to service a 2003 gti turbo oil changes?Depending on what engine you get you may or may not have to do the timing belt. The 1.8T engine has a timing belt where the VR6 engine does not. You should expect to spend around $750 to $1000 on the timing belt depending on what is replaced and where it is done. You should be using synthetic oil in either case no matter what engine you end up getting. Expect to spend around $60 to $80 for a oil change. You can do it yourself for much cheaper however.

    I have a 1999 Civic, 63K, do I need a new timing belt?

The dealer says it is supposed to be replaced at 100K or 10 years which ever comes first. For a 60K service and the timing belt (and inspect water pump) they want $1100! This seems a bit much. Does this really need to be done or can it wait? How will I determine when it needs it? I just wanted the usual oil change and got this surprise. Thanks.I have a 1999 Civic, 63K, do I need a new timing belt? You don't have to but if it breaks you will be replacing the engine which costs a lot more than $1,100. Rubber degrades over time so its going break eventually even if you never hit 100k miles.

Short term its going to cost you but long term its cheaper to replace it before it breaks. Shop around for a better price like not at the dealership.
    I have a 1999 Civic, 63K, do I need a new timing belt?
i say your fine till about 100k, but this is a important part to change and when you do the timing belt it is best to have the water pump changed as well.

$1100 is high IMO, 6 months ago i did the same thing to my car (same as yours)

Dealership #1 quoted me $990, Dealership # 2 quoted me $347 (for the same work, i supplied the belt $50 belt)

didn't change my original timing belt till 153k miles and its ok, but some go earlier than others so its better to be safe than sorry, when a timing belt breaks it could cause major engine damage.
    I have a 1999 Civic, 63K, do I need a new timing belt?
Well a 60k costs 300 to 400 and the timing belt costs 700 to 900. The water pump, cam and crank seals, tensioner and belt should all be replaced at the same time. Also change the service belts while your at it and be good for another 100k miles. Its been 10 years on your original belt, its time. I recommend factory parts, its the only way to go. Dont wait or you might regret it if that belt breaks.
It's still a bit early to change it, and the dealership is totally ripping you off. Get it changed no later than 105k and you'll be fine. Sounds like they are looking to nickle and dime. Shop around, and don't go to dealerships. Depending on where you live, I'd say anything over $700 is too much. 4-600 is more reasonable. Good luck!
The entire %26quot;Gates%26quot; kit is available for $69.79 at the site below.Includes water pump, belt, tensioner.Assuming you have the 1.6L I-4 motor. You don't have to pay BIG money to have this done! The labor is costly however, but worth it.At 63,000 you are approaching the end-life of the belt.If you don't race or abuse your motor you should still have some time.If it does break all the Valves whack the pistons and bend.Replacing the Belt and Pump buys you many years of peace of mind.

  • How much do these repairs cost on a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT?

    Hello,

I have a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT with almost 90,000 miles. I've been told that it's almost time for my timing belt to be changed (I actually think it doesn't need to be until 120,000 miles so maybe my mechanic is trying to rip me off?). The estimates have ranged from $400 to $1000. Who is right? I know that I can get the actual part for $55, as well as a timing belt tensioner for $69. Also, my car idles pretty rough and shifts and downshifts pretty rough sometimes (even though it's an automatic) but I rebuilt the transmission about a year ago. Could my oxygen sensors be bad? My ex-mechanic boyfriend thinks so, or something with the fuel intake. Oxygen sensors run for about $82, but how much would a mechanic charge? I just want to know what to expect when I go into a shop if these 3 things actually need to be replaced. Thanks to anyone who knows! How much do these repairs cost on a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT?I wouldn't take a chance on the timing belt and tensioner. If it goes, you'll bend valves at the very least. Probably ought to go for a water pump while you're there, since you have to take the same stuff off to get at that. Did it myself not long ago, and it was kind of a pita getting the pulley and motor mounts off. Of course mine are probly a lot rustier than yours.....

Rough running could be almost anything. If its sensors, those will show up in the trouble codes, which you can get scanned for free at Autozone. I would guess something else, because bad O2 sensor should light up the check engine light.

The guys in the neons.org forums have been a lot of help to me with my '96.
How much do these repairs cost on a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT?
Unfortunatley the problems you have discussed are typical of dodge neons. Around 100,000 is about time for everything to go. Transmission and head gasket included. Take it to someone you trust or shop around a bit.
How much do these repairs cost on a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT?
Timing belt and tension-er, around $600. As for idle problems and downshifting, O2 sensor will not be at fault, more the transmission or torque converter.

Does a 52 plate Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2ltr petrol have a timing Chain or Timing Belt?

Belt. Probably about 拢120 or so. Normally changed around the 80k / 5 year mark - some cars differ. There will be extra cost if there are belt pre-tensioners to be changed as well.
Does a 52 plate Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2ltr petrol have a timing Chain or Timing Belt?
Belt and probably around 拢200 for the full kit and not just the belt at a local independent
a belt probably but the only way to know for sure is take it apart and find out

How long can I nurse a clutch for? how much to replace?

I test drove a 93 Corolla and the clutch felt like it was on it's way out (the engagement point was really far up the pedal, and it didn't have much bite).

If I start from a standstill gentley and try to do mostly highway driving can I nurse it a few months?

When I used to work on my car (years ago) it didn't look that hard to change the clutch. How much will the parts cost me? (clutch, throw-out bearing, gear lube...?)

also the timing belt is due for a change, is the 4A-FE a non-interference engine? How long can I nurse a clutch for? how much to replace? With the clutch, it's hard to say how long it will last but it will start slipping in the highest gear (4th or 5th) first - at this point, it must be replaced immediately. Before panicking, check the clutch adjustment - if it has never been adjusted, you may still have quite a few miles left but if it's already all the way up, you are likely to face the issue pretty soon. Cost of replacement - $400-500.

Technically, this is a non-interference engine but if the belt brakes at high RPM, is still may sustain damage. Also, t-belt replacement should not cost more than $400, and it's cheaper to do it when you have a choice than when you get stranded in the middle of nowhere, and a tow truck - at your expense - pulls you to the nearest shop that may take advantage of you simply because you have no choice.
How long can I nurse a clutch for? how much to replace?
Replacing the clutch requires removing the transmission, so it is costly if you have a shop do it...depending how you shop around, it could be 3 - 400 at todays rates.

If you attempt it yourself, about 100 - 150 for parts, and perhaps 20 for a good alignment tool...
How long can I nurse a clutch for? how much to replace?
Call around for estimates on cost to repair, but first check to see if the clutch is adjustable, most hydraulic clutches are not. Clutches are not hard to change but it does take time. Be sure to get a repair manual and follow the instructions.

I need some info on timing belts??

Well I was wondering if it was easy changing timing belts on a 1995 Lexus LS400. I have 125,000, and I think it is time to change them. If it is too hard how much do you think a mechanic would charge me.I need some info on timing belts??timing belt and timing belt tensioner with water pump and coolant flush about 1,000.00 with labor less tax.
I need some info on timing belts??
It is a bloody difficult job. That V8 block is so big that it leaves no room to work on. It would take 4 - 5 hour job, and cost of belt, water pump. oil seals, and belt would run you $150. labor should be another $600 or so.
I need some info on timing belts??
You're crazy if you try this without a full blown repair facility full of equipment. I'm sure you can get a quote for this over the phone. They'll probably suggest, and you should, change your waterpump at the same time.
125,000 miles sounds like stretching it for a timing belt. You don't want to put this off. I put off my 60,000 mile Civic belt until 110,000 miles. It broke and cost me $1500 in 1993 dollars to fix the engine.

The dealer's Service Dept will tell you how many miles your make and model car can go before it's time to change it. That gives you plenty of time to save up for it. $600 for a 60,000-mile belt job is only $150/year for four years, or $3/week. You just need to consider it a necessary cost of owning the vehicle.

    Please do it promptly.

    Best regards,

    Mike

How to care about old cars? Lexus ES300, 92 year?

hi, I have a Lexus ES300. 92year model. I just want to ask how should I care about car, so that it would work at least 5-10y more. I mean, there are some fluids wich you add to the gas tank - they clean injuctors and stuff.... at lease it says so on the pakage. Does this stuff real helps?

Another thing is I went to mechanic to ask how much gonna cost me to change timing belt and transmission fluid he toldme 1000$ at least it's like 50% of the cost of my car! Now what I,m trying to figure out is there any cheap way to keep car running that's all I need.

thank you!How to care about old cars? Lexus ES300, 92 year?Shop around for a mechanic that will have a reasonable price. I'm restoring a 63 Buick, and it runs like a champ. Some of these fluids will work. Just takes time. Best thing is to keep on top of the maintenance. Change oil regularly, flush the cooling system, and the engine as well (I flush my engine about every 100k miles) Also, find a shop manual for your car. It will help you with repairs that you can do on your own and it will save a lot of money in the long run. Plus you will know what you've repaired.
How to care about old cars? Lexus ES300, 92 year?
First off, replacing a timing belt and transmission fluid/filter isn't that involved, so $1000 is quite pricey...I'd suggest calling around to several shops in your area to get quotes...remember, dealerships charge the highest for the same job...

For everything else, do regular maintenance and fluid checks/changes as per your owners manual, and you should be fine.

Believe it or not, the most common cause of failures is that owners don't do the simple things, like opening the hood each week and actually %26quot;looking%26quot; at things. When something looks %26quot;different%26quot;, that is the time to have it checked professionally...

  • 1999 Toyota Camry: Water pump and timing belt replacement?

I have replaced a couple of water pumps but never on a foreign car and was wondering roughly how long it would take. Also I was looking at some places online that sell water pump/timing kits and I just wanted to make sure....what would be needed to replace the water pump and timing belt 100% correctly....I see tensioners and a whole bunch of other items with the kit and just want to make sure I am getting EVERYTHING to do a proper job (i.e., ooohh, I didn't replace this part that should have been replaced now I have to take everthing apart again). Thanks for your time.

BTW The car has 237,000 miles and the last time the timing belt was changed was around 110,000 so think it is due time before problems. My neighbor has an 91 GEO Prizm. Three months ago he called me to see what was wrong with his vehicle. It needed just a tune up so I did it and replaced also the spark wires. They still need to give me $33 to finish paying for the parts. The lady said she would within a couple of days but she never paid. Actually, they were a both avoiding me, but I didn't think of their action that way.

Two days ago, he came to my house and asked me if I can go pull him 7 miles back home. The vehicle was 25 miles south and the timing belt needs to be replaced. I don't want to charge him for the towing. I want also to give him a break as she works at the gas station and he is on a low income . I normaly charge $53/hr. I would do it for free, but I am struggling myself with all the bills I have.

How much should I ask to change the timing belt? As I want to ask him to pay me up front this time...

Thank youI don't how much I should charge my neighbor...?Tell him your fee and then tell him how much you are willing to take off but that since he still hasn't paid for the other parts, you will require payment up front. If he fusses, just say fine. He won't be able to get the job done anywhere else. The guys taking advantage of you and will suck you dry if you let him which makes you the sucker. What has he ever done for you?
I don't how much I should charge my neighbor...?
just ask him to pay half of what you would normally charge, plus your 33.00. he shouldnt get anything done for him unless he pays for the things that you have done in the past. if you let him get away with it, then he will do it for as long as you are neighbors. stand up and get that money!
I don't how much I should charge my neighbor...?
ask them to give you what they can...

It might make them feel guilty about not paying you last time.

    This is a hard situation.

You seem like a great guy who helps out his neighbors and they seem like an elderly couple trying to make it as well.

Put the receipt for the timing belt and also the parts for the first repair in their mailbox and leave a note saying that you would appreciate them paying you whenever they get the chance.

Dont get taken advantage of though. Next time something happens with their car, remind them kindly that they never paid you for the previous repairs. Let them know that you also work for a living and this is how you pay your bills as well.
you sound like a a kind soul

just tell him the part he needs ask him to go get it then you will fi it that way you wont be out of pocket but can still do it as a good turn
You've got a friend for life now! Set a fair price, one you can live with and he can afford. After payment, just tell him you no longer plan on doing any repair work ouside of your regular job. And,he should call there when he needs help.
You could charge him half price which would be about $26 for the labor/tow. Charge him for the timing belt as well (at least half of it).Tell him you're giving it to him half price because he's your neighbor, but also tell him that he needs to pay you the $33 he still owes. If you want to make it more complicated, you could always ask him for the $33 before you work on his car plus whatever you charge him to fix the other car. With the money up front. If he doesn't agree with it, tell him to go somewhere else where they'll most likely rip him off.
I have been here many times man - it is hard times for a lot of folks right now.

Since this is your neighbor I would say try to work with him - neighbors need to stick together, I would ask for the 33.00 from the previous tune up first off.

Then talk to him like a man, in his house if possible, he will feel more comfortable talking money in his home.

tell him what you charge - write up a bill then deduct a friendship amount -

    4 hours to change at - 53.00 HR = 212.00

plus the new timing belt and gasket = 120.00

Totaling= 332.00 - I would not take more than 112 away so you will get at least 100.00 bill.

I know its a pain in the **** to change out a GEO belt, so I think your doing him a huge favor - if he disagrees, let him pay full price.

But make sure you get the 33.00 owed first, then get the money from him to buy the parts, or let him go get the parts.
since you sound like a good neighbor you should tell him that you have to charge him for the timing belt and since he still own you $33 you would like it if they payed up front if they can. Let them know that you also work for a living and this is how you pay your bills as well. and if they can't give you the money up front see if they are willing to pay you something and then pay you the rest when they can. since it sounds like they are an older couple they could've have forgotten too. but you just need to remind them about it. and let them know that you wouldn't fix it until they pay you something up front either. for how much to charge them half would be fair but if your not comfortable with that you need to find a price your comfortable with. but make sure they don't take advantage of you either because if you let them get away with it then there going to keep getting away with it. good luck.

How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?

    I have a 1990 Chevy Camaro RS. With a 305 TBI. Stock I think is 170hp.

I've resealed %26amp; cleaned the oil pan, put a new oil pump, changed the timing belt, resealed %26amp; cleaned the intake manifold, and a few other tune ups.

What should I do to get some more horsepower out of this engine?

My budget is about $500 for parts. How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?A $500 budget is tough to work with but here is a big hp boost combination if you can go up to about $725.

I said %26quot;almost%26quot; the most horsepower available because after the mods it would be better to take your car to a speed shop and get a dyno tuned custom burn chip specific for your setup. But that alone would cost nearly $500, so the JET Stage 2 Performance Chip is your next best option.

try an after market air filter like k%26amp; n 50 bucks and true dual exhaust system maybe some good glass packs or cheap flowmaster from 180 to 400 bucks. there is also a tornado which is supposed to help with air mixture about 40 bucks and a throttle body spacer that could help with air fuel mixture also about 50 to 100 bucks depending on which one. the difference is small individually but does help,

  • How much should I sell my car for?

I own a 93 Toyota corolla and I am trying to sell it at a descent price since I need the money.

It is a great car and I changed the timing belt and tires 9,000 miles ago and filter, oil, lube, wheel alignment recently and passed through a 25 point inspection with no problems.

The only problems it has is that the a/c stopped working(blows air-but that is an extra feature on the 93 anyway) and the speedometer sometimes works and sometimes it doesnt(it works on the higway, when its too cold, when it gets warm etc)

I wasnt sure how to price it according to kbb.

I dont believe it is in fair condition since the tires are new, timing belt is new and it runs great. I never had problems starting, getting warm in the winter etc.

What price would you put on it? Good, fair condition, something else?

ThanksHow much should I sell my car for?I would say its more good then fair since its a 1993 if it was a 2003 with those issues then I would say fair to poor. So you can start with the price for good condition and if no takers then lower it.
How much should I sell my car for?
Go to KBB.com and put in the info of your car...they can give you a retail price or trade-in value.
How much should I sell my car for?
It sounds like it's in fair condition, but since you got some new parts for it you can ask a higher price. If you live in the Southwest and you're selling it now, without A/C you'll never sell it, but if you live up north it won't be a huge deal.

The big thing is mileage and the condition of the body, frame, and engine.
Check KBB.com to get an idea.

In my area, assuming average mileage and fair condition, a base model Camary should be sold for around $1700. Go on the above website and put in all your info for a better idea.

    Good luck!
    1000
It depends on a lot of factors like how many miles does the car have, also the condition of the car and any extras like power windows or is it an XL model matters. The best place to look would be Kelly blue book.com, they can give you an approximate value. If you sell privately you are sure to get more money for it, as opposed to going to a car dealership you won't get as much for it I'm afraid.

Help with timing belt? Mazda Protege?

I am purchasing a 2002 Mazda Protege tomorrow at a dealer, the car has 132,000 miles on it and I asked them if they knew if the timing belt had been changed. They said they have no clue. Help with timing belt? Mazda Protege?
If this is the FS-DE engine (2.0 liters, no distributor), the worst that can happen is it breaks and you get stranded somewhere. (This is not an interference-fit engine.)

Had I a car like this (which I did, come to think of it - this was the engine in my '00 626) I'd have the water pump replaced at the same time, just as a precaution. You're looking at maybe $300-400 total, since it takes a couple of hours to get the old one out and the new one in.
Help with timing belt? Mazda Protege?
The belt should have been inspected at 60,000 and replaced by 105,000. You could check if the dealer will have it replaced at a very reasonable price, maybe contingent on the sale.

Book time is about 2 hours labor, but can be done in less.

For peace of mind I would replace it.
a timing belt is not a quick fix job like an oil change. It will cost several hundred dollars. I hope you are getting a really great deal on that Protege (less than $2300) since it has so many miles on it.

  • What are some problems that can arise when changing a timing belt in a 2002 WRX?

i just bought my first car (02 wrx- 4 dr) about a month ago, the previous owner replaced the timing belt just before i got it. i have put on about 400km and the other morning it would not start (it turned over but would not go)

i brought it to the garage and the guy told me that in replacing the belt it may have damaged the valves of some sort?

i don't speak car and need some help! has anyone ever had this issue and/or know what it could be? Also how much would i be looking at, $ wise? What are some problems that can arise when changing a timing belt in a 2002 WRX?Well if the belt is off by even just a tooth or two and the valve train doesn't rotate correctly, the piston will touch the valve and bend it. It is not an easy job to do and if not done 100% correctly, it is 100% catastrophic for the engine. If the valve are bent even a tiny bit, you can't build compression to start the motor.
What are some problems that can arise when changing a timing belt in a 2002 WRX?
I don't think the timing belt is your problem. If that were broken, it wouldn't even turn over. The WRX has an interference engine so if the timing belt breaks, the engine is trash.

I would suspect that you might have a fuel problem since it is turning over. The most likely cause is a bad fuel pump. Try a simple test. Turn the ignition to the on position (not to crank) and see if you hear a whirring noise for a few seconds. If you do not, then the fuel pump (or the pump relay) is bad.

Try replacing the relay first. That is the cheapest.
What are some problems that can arise when changing a timing belt in a 2002 WRX?
If it ran for 400 km then I would guess that the previous belt change was done correctly. If the timing was off, it would not run. There would be backfiring and spitting out the intake.

I would look at the fuel system and ignition before worrying about a valve or belt problem.

Strange that a mechanic would say not to change an item that is supposed to be changed. Hmm.

Belt, water pump, tensioner are the typical items.

You can find shops around here that will do that job for around $500 USD.

Probably a half day job to do yourself if you've never done one before and are reasonably good at working on your car. Save 70-80% if you do it yourself.

How do I undo a bolt on my timing belt tensioner that is too tight?

Changing my timing belt kit on my 1.8 Astra auto, but now I'm stuck at the Tensioner bolt.

I slipped off the old belt but still can't get the tensioner bolt loose to replace it. I have a new one so I don't mind damaging the old one if thats what it takes

theres not much room to work with

I can't use the screwdriver with a the torx bit attached because its to long

the bolt takes a t40 torx bit but I'm gradually rounding that out with each attempt

so now I'v given up and asking for help.

    anyone have any ideas???

thanks in advance. How do I undo a bolt on my timing belt tensioner that is too tight?Go to Sears and get the bolt removal sockets. Ask the sales rep. Those things will dig into the torx, hex or whatever type of bolt you have. Oh...also try bolt loosener PT Blaster.
How do I undo a bolt on my timing belt tensioner that is too tight?
Spray with WD40 and let it sit over night.
How do I undo a bolt on my timing belt tensioner that is too tight?
Surprisingly with rusted, frozen nuts/bolts, I had luck with WD-40 spraying and allowing to soak. All came loose [6] except one and it twisted off. However, these were out in the open, easy to get to.

    Good luck.
Heat will help too if you can SAFELY key word SAFELY get s torch to it and heat it up with out hurting any other parts it will expand and then shrink as it cools. as it cools spray with lubricant WD or Silicon spray and try it again.
Go to www.crcindusttries.com and scroll for CRC Freeze-Off and also CRC556. Both types of spray can help lossen frozen bolts. When loosening a bolt where you don't have length space, an angle swivel socket can be used or any tool with a 45 and a short torx adapter socket. For additional leverage an extension handle breaker bar can be of use.

How to check the timing belt?

I have a '95 Mitsubishi Diamante with the DOHC V6 that I bought recently, and I was wondering if there's a way to check the timing belt and make sure it's in good shape. The guy I bought it from said he didn't know when or if it's been changed. I'm very tight on money right now, so I don't want to just replace it unless I have to. I'm pretty sure it's an interference engine...

Also, if I had a mechanic do it(check the belt), approx how much would it cost?

ThanksHow to check the timing belt?well in labor it would cost about 240.00 to replace your timing belt, and if you are going to do that you should change your water pump it does cost anymore labor to change the water pump when you are changing the timing belt

  • Timing Belt, 2000 Chevy Impala LS?

Okay, I just wanted to know, how would I go about changing the timing belt on a 2000 Chevy Impala LS. How hard is it? What would I need to do? If not, how much does it average out to be to just take it to a shop and have it taken care of there?Timing Belt, 2000 Chevy Impala LS?No need to change it because it is a timing chain, which rarely if ever fails. They wear out as the engine does.
Timing Belt, 2000 Chevy Impala LS?
No, ALL V6 engines in ALL Impalas are OHV engines have chain-driven camshafts. As Alfonso and Allen said, they rarely fail, but when they do, expect severe damage to valves and push rods (and possibly the cylinder heads). What is the motor doing to make you want to do this?
Timing Belt, 2000 Chevy Impala LS?
NO it is a belt !! what makes you think you need one? they usually last as long as the engine.it isn't a backyard mechanic type of job it involves tearing the fan belt side of the engine apart and can get very tricky. it'll cost about 600 - 900 dollars to replace mostly labor charges.
I don't believe that there is a timing belt on an Impala.

All motors from then had timing chains on them.

Why does my 2000 fiat brava 1.2 sx petrol burn oil had head gasket done and timing belt changed 65k miles?

Why does my 2000 fiat brava 1.2 sx petrol burn oil had head gasket done and timing belt changed 65k miles?
what engine oil are u ,using . it sounds like piston rings ,some how oil is passing through

they could be worn. or wrong oil been used
Why does my 2000 fiat brava 1.2 sx petrol burn oil had head gasket done and timing belt changed 65k miles?
You say white smoke is coming out of the exhaust?? If your engine was burning oil, it would be emitting blue smoke.

White smoke tends to mean water is entering the exhaust system.

If it is burning oil, it could be from, as already mentioned, the piston rings. Or it could be the valve stem oil seals...which requires quite a lot of labour.
White smoke is normal until the engine warms up.

If it`s burning oil,you should see blue smoke from the exhaust.

If you get blue smoke when you start up first thing in the morning,or pulling away from lights after a wait,it`s most likely the valve stem oil seals

    Otherwise it`s the piston rings.

If there is no smoke, check for leaks.

It`s difficult to give a price, some car`s valve stem oil seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head, but most not.

If it`s the rings, the head and sump will have to come off,and maybe the engine will have to be removed to remove the sump.

I have a Manual 1988 Ford Ranger, and I have to change the timing belt on it. Yet i do not have the money to put up for it right now, so until I save up the money I was told to %26quot;go easy on it%26quot; now i love my truck I do all the maintenance for it and treat it very well. Yet the timing belt is a more advanced maintenance, thus i do not know much about it. Now my question is how can I %26quot;go easy on it%26quot;. what put the stress on it?

    Starting from a complete stop?

    Running High RPMs?

Down shifting to slow down rather than braking?

    Higher speeds?

    First gear?

    Second gear?

    Third? Fourth? Fifth?

When I push in the clutch?

    Switching gears?

Putting it in nuetral after leaving 4th gear because I am comming to a red light to stop?

ANYTHING WILL HELP THANK YOU VERY MUCH.What puts %26quot;stress%26quot; on a timing belt.?don't let the other parts bully it so much, and tell the engine to stop screaming at it.

the timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft(s), which in turn controls the opening and closing of the engine's valves, and also sometimes operates the oil and water pumps. So i would say high speeds, fast acceleration, high rpm and just being %26quot;fast%26quot; in general with the truck would be stressful for the belt.

changing gears (up or down), pushing the clutch and starting from a stop shouldnt affect it unless you do so violently.
What puts %26quot;stress%26quot; on a timing belt.?
My experence is going too fast too quick. Back out of it, save gas, and wear and tear.
What puts %26quot;stress%26quot; on a timing belt.?
    Time and Mileage.

As soon as you start the engine its stress- nothing you can do with driving habits/conditions will help, if its time to go, it'll go!

    Sorry but Good Luck!
The timing belt is just wrapped around a bunch of pulleys which allows the rotation of the engine's crankshaft to spin pulleys attached to other systems. I would think that the only way to stress the belt while driving is by hard acceleration or high revs.
Age and mileage. They won't wear faster or slower from driving habits. They're not like brakes or clutches. They just travel around the pulleys like the serpentine belt.
You have to reverse the quadruple clutch axel rod over to the bi-zanitine pletheral knocking cap. That will relive tension on the timing belt.....

About how much will it cost to get everything done?1998 dodge neon r/t SOHC timing belt.?your looking at about 350 bucks to get the timing belt and the water pump replaced on it, you don't do this in a few minutes and its real important that its gets put back in time right or else you may get engine damage from it being installed wrong, the single over head cam engine can bend valves in the head if it isn't installed right and that will cost you a lot of money to get it fixed, have a shop do this one because its not an easy job to do,and getting i back in time is a little bit tricky also,id rather pay someone to do it as have the engine messes up on it,i get the all the time when owners have tried to install them and got it so bad out of time that it bent the valves in the head, the 350 you pay now will be well worth it,good luck.
1998 dodge neon r/t SOHC timing belt.?
TIMING BELTS FOR THESE ARE BETWEEN 45-55$ AT AUTO ZONE NOW TO INSTALL ITS NOT THAT HARD BUT A CHEAP MECHANIC SHOULD CHARGE YOU LIKE 20-50

JUST REMOVE AND INSTALL TAKES LIKE 5-10 MINS

timig belts are usually removed by loosening up the altenator bracket and pulling out the old belt then on your engine bay their should be a sticker with a diagrahm that explains how to route the new timing belt ......throw it in and tightend everything back up

i did this to my car 2 months ago took me like 5 mins
1998 dodge neon r/t SOHC timing belt.?
Take it to the dealer as it is VERY CRUCIAL to get the timing of the camshaft correct. It won't be too expensive since it is an easy job to do but requires knowledge and special tools.

    edit: sorry I meant dealer/mechanic

Either way it will be fairly cheap.
Ballpark, $450-600, depending where you have it done and what parts they replace. The answer above is more or less correct for the accessory belt replacement. The timing belt can be a 6 hr job.
check around at a few independent shops and get some prices.

Also make sure the estimate guarantees they can't exceed it by more than 10%. That helps keep them honest.
probly about 300$ depending where you go....get a guy with no %26quot;overhead%26quot; and it wont be as much....i had my timing chain done on my 97 dakota...i got a guy with a %26quot;low overhead%26quot; ....cost me 350$....urs is a chain and isnt as difficult...so i would say it is about 300$ its a good idea to get it done....could mess ur engine up

2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?

So, yeah. I brought the car into the dealer to change the timing belt [routine maintainance] and they changed out the water pump and put on new fan belts at the same time.

Afterward the car sounds a bit funny. The engine is louder and makes a sputtering noise in the lower RPMs, but seemed to perform fine, so whatever.

Fast foward a month or so and I found that the car was down a quart of oil. Just yesterday I noticed that the exhaust is smokey [not a whole lot, but enough that I could tell] and doesn't have the fruity smell that it's supposed to. Then today my engine light came on.

Anybody know WTF they screwed up and how much it's gonna cost me to get it fixed?2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?There's really no parallel between a timing belt and water pump vs. oil consumption.

The %26quot;sounds a bit funny%26quot; doesn't really do much to describe a noise.

You'll need to have the fault code(s) retrieved from the PCM to determine just what set off the check engine light.
2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?
Oh dude! When they put the new belt on they got it just a hair off so your camshaft isn't opening the valves in sync with the crank. This will leave a valve open with the piston at top dead center and has probably bent a valve stem, knocked a hole in the piston, scored up the cylinder wall, and generally screwed up the motor. I'd be back in to that dealership pronto for a new motor; the one you have is toast.

P.S. I'd sue them if they don't offer to fix it for free. It was their screw up that did the damage.
2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?
Timing belt Replacement is a job that has nothing to do with the symptoms you just mention, If I would have to guess? they switched the engine .lol.
if there was a bent valve ya'd know about it , if ya burnin oil and the exhuast is real smokey specially after start up it might be valve stem oil seals which wouldn't have been touched in a timing belt replacment or if its using water too ya could check the oil filler cap for a yellowey gunge if there is some ya head gasket is gone

i doubt it was anything to do with the belt being done though , if the belt was on wrong the car wouldn't run ... full stop

What can cause a timing belt to break or fall of? ?

Well my 2005 Honda Cr-V had it's timing belt fall off or break.

It only has 51,000 miles on it.

So I was just wondering what could cause it? My friends said that it doesn't really happen on newish cars

Also, how much does it cause to change or fix it?

THANKS!What can cause a timing belt to break or fall of? ?most vehicles timing belts should be changed between 60 and 90 thousand miles, yours may have stretched, cracked,or if water pump is leaking deteriorated
What can cause a timing belt to break or fall of? ?
Due to the load and constant flexing of the belt, these belts usually have a maintenance change interval of 60,000 miles - yours didn't make it.

It's really as simple as that.

Other causes include ice built up around the drive pulley which breaks the belt when the engine is cranked over, oil leakage which deteriorates and softens the belt and, obviously, a seized camshaft or, if it's driven off the same belt, a seized water pump.
What can cause a timing belt to break or fall of? ?
Wow! you are getting great answers. A timing belt is just like an alternator, A/C, or other belt. they get old and crack. A hard driver(fast starts and stops) can shorten the life somewhat. Usually, as others posted, you should get over 60,000 miles on a belt. Heat is a big killer of timing belts. They are behind a cover and heat buildup is worse and the tines crack and usually break when accelerating or decelerating.

The expense is not that bad unless you have a zero tolerance engine. For performance enhancement some engines are designed with the valves as close to the pistons as possible. There is simply not enough clearance for the valves to open and close with the piston at the top. When a timing belt breaks a valve will hit the top of a piston. At the least any valves extended will be bent. On heads with 12 to 16 valves there will be more than one. A lot of engines have sodium filled valves. These are very expensive.

In some cases, usually depending on the speed at the time of the break, a valve can hit a piston hard enough to break the piston. This now has become a nightmare so you need to be prepared going in. Find out if your engine is a zero tolerance engine.

If all is good make sure to replace the water pump if the timing belt runs it. It is another part with a planned work life and will save you money in the long run. Also replace the thermostat now and check idler pulleys and possible oil leaks.
Life is tough for timing belts. Sometimes crap gets on it or chemicals brake it down. I do my own timing belts so it costs me 80$. Might as well get the water pump done too. to get someone to do it for you 500$ give or take.

Find out if its an inference engine things get more complicated if it is.

When you get the car back and it doesnt run properly take it back and tell them to line up the timing marks properly. Sometimes the belt slips a few teeth when its applied and it realy screws up the timing. But because the mechanic didnt want to do the whole job over again he told me that there where other problems with the car. Hope this helps.
You must be drivin the heck out of that honda, huh? Usually they make it to around 65k before they break. Hope you didn't bend and valves when it broke.
could have been a defective belt to begin with or could have been been installed wrong or with excessive tension etc. Cost to replace is about $300. Call around for free estimates. lucky engine was not damaged.
the tensoiner , ck to see if the motor is a interferance motor-meaning that the valves can hit the pistons, before putting a new belt on motor

  • Can anyone tell me how much it would cost to replace the water pump and timing belt in a 2002 Ford Focus?

The engine is a 2.0 L SOHC 8V FI engine. I know nothing about cars and I don't want to get ripped off. I took it in to NTB this weekend to have the oil changed and tired rotated and that's what they told me needed done. I know nothing about cars, so I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what I should be prepared for. Thanks! Can anyone tell me how much it would cost to replace the water pump and timing belt in a 2002 Ford Focus? probably between 400 and 600 dollars depending on where you take it. Dealerships charge more than local mechanics.

How do I know the timing belt/water pump needs to be replaced?

I recently bought a 1992 Honda Accord. It has high mileage but the records kept on it were impecable up to about the last 3 years. I have read that you need to replace the timing belt/water pump every 80k miles. However; I do not know when it was changed last. The Only record in the book on the subject was back at 90k miles. That was the first time they had the timing belt changed.

So How do I know its time to change it again? The car now has 199k miles. I do not want to do unnecessary work before time, however; I also know that the affects it will have on the engine is great if its not done within the right TIME! Is there anyway to know it needs to be done? What kind of signs will the car give? And how much is it going to cost me when it has to be done? Thanks! How do I know the timing belt/water pump needs to be replaced?A water pump is mostly pretty obvious when it is going/gone it chirps it squeaks and your temperature will usually be higher than it usually was [not always]. As for a timing belt... they are relatively inexpensive, the labor isnt that bad since the car is VERY easy to work on, and it is difficult to tell when one is needed since the most it will make is a whining noise when its getting weaker, only sometimes though. This is hard to hear too. Best advice I have is to just get a couple appraisals/estimates, or have a friend who is mechanically savvy take a look to see if he/she can tell if the belt is worn to the point where it needs replacing.

I had a timing belt done for $120 parts and labor on a 91 accord (same car)
How do I know the timing belt/water pump needs to be replaced?
can't tell you the price, don't know where you live and where you get yoiur work done, call around..

belts need to be replaced when they're worn.

look for cracks, frays and listen for squealing. (sometimes the water pump will squeal when it's bad...) otherwise, take the car in to someone you trust and have them look at it..ESTIMATE only..

2000 honda accord lx timing belt question?

so I know that it is recommend that I get it changed every 80,000 miles or so and I know that it is recommended to change the water pump at the same time. my question is if there is a way to just check if the timing belt needs to be changed or not and how much it would cost to replace just the timing belt. if you know how much it would cost to replace both the water pump and timing belt together than that would also be appreciated but basically I am trying to get the most done for the cheapest price.2000 honda accord lx timing belt question? This depends exclusively on where you live, the price in California is different from say here in NY.

Timing belts go for around 65.00 labor 100.00 per hour, the water pump can be anywhere from 95.00-150 and 100.00 per hr
2000 honda accord lx timing belt question?
u HAVE TO change the pump when u change the belt.....the pump runs off the timing belt so if u don't change it the wear pattern changes and causes the pump to fail rather quickly causing the timing belt to fail as well causing MAJOR engine damage...

as for the belt ....u don't risk blowing the motor by just %26quot;checking%26quot; it......replace it .....

as for prices of the parts autozone.com....advanceautoparts.com....鈥?any other online parts store will give u estimate on parts prices........

as for labor the cost to replace both is within 10 bucks of just replacing the belt since u have to remove belt to change pump anyway...and after belt is of its only 2-3 more minutes to remove pump....
2000 honda accord lx timing belt question?
There is no way to check the timing belt without doing everything you would basicly do to just replace it in the first place. It is best to follow Honda's recommendations and just replace the timing belt. The whole job including the water pump should not cost more than $300-400. The reason that it is recommended to replace the water pump at the same time is that you have to remove the water pump in order to get to the timing belt cover and if you don't replace it at the same time and it later fails the labor costs to replace the water pump are about the same as the timing belt. So its better to just do a little preventative maintenance and just replace the pump while you are doing the belt. Water pumps are cheap but labor is expensive.... I have a 94 civic with over 227k miles and I have replaced the timing belt/ water pump every 60k miles as recommended without any problems. If you neglect your timing belt and it breaks it will destroy your engine. Take care of your Honda and it will literally last forever !!! One last recommendation do not take your car to the dealer for the work they will way overcharge you.. I have a local mechanic who specializes in Hondas and he does mine for $200 plus parts .. So long story short you can get it done right and at a good price if you find a good local shop. The dealer would charge you over 600-800 for the job.

What are costs to replace a timing belt on Nissan Maxima 97?

I'm considering buying a Nissan maxima 97 with 90K miles. Owner has everything original on it except tires (including timing belt, battery, muffler etc.) and has maintained it well. I'm not a car guy, but wondering what expenses / or parts I would have to consider changing or replacing? I've heard the timing belt is a must cause it can ruin the engine. Is that true, can I drive it till it breaks and then replace it? How much does that cost, and any other things that I should consider? Thanks

ThanksWhat are costs to replace a timing belt on Nissan Maxima 97?ok dont listen to anybodys answer except mine cause these people are stupid and dont even know how to start there own car listen i had a 97 maxima is was a good car and prety fast and it has a timeing chain whitch dose have to be replaced at like 120 thousand miles or less sometimes people get lucky and they go 180 thousand miles and it dosent break but when it dose it causees motor damage and valve damage which mean ur car is buted so ur best bet is to spend extra money and take it to the dealer and for 800 bucks you get the timing chain done and all the other bels plus water pump whgich needs to get done any time timing belt is replaced anyway plus it will get done right
What are costs to replace a timing belt on Nissan Maxima 97?
In 1995 Nissan went to chain driven camshafts on the VQ-30 motor. Most the time if there is no chain rattle it is maintence free, except for oil changes and air filters. Almost any Maxima will run 300,000 miles the motors are that good. 12 year old radatior and hoses need to be looked at for replacement. Don't overheat any motor and they will last a long time.

if a belt breaks at 70 mph bad things can happen even to a non interference engine...350 to 450.dollars.....you may want to change plugs and wires...look at hoses..flush coolant and tranny...you have to figure on 100 dollars a month for repairs...some months nothing some...200/400 dollars .waterpump serpentine belt .starter,alternator,battery...many things to go wrong..
The 97 Maxima has a timing chain that does not need to be changed.

  • How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?

I have not done any real work on cars for a number of years. The occational alternator and oil changes. I would like to know if I could pull off doing this timing belt thing on my own. Is there that much to it? Does it take any wierd tools? Or would it be easier to pay someone to do it. I have all the basic tools for regular maintenace. Does the car need to be re-timed when I am done? How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?Well it is a time consuming job, but not terribly difficult. As the engine is transverse mounted there is very little clearance in which to work and you have to be a little bit of a contortionist and have a reasoable number of adapters and extensions to get into the tight places. There may additionally be a couple of TORX fittings, though I cannot recall if Honda uses those in place of Allen fittings where flush mounted hands are required for clearance.

Also, as I recall, Honda recommends changing the water pump when you change the belt, as you have done most of the work to get access to it when you do a belt change and it would be a shame to have done all of that only to have to be back in there again should the water pump fail.

As to changing the belt, there are a couple of covers to remove and often some components are in the way. It varies from car to car, but it is not unusual to have to remove things like air filter housings, radiator reservoirs, windshield wiper tanks, and sometimes even starter motors and alternators. It just depends upon what you find in the way.

Any good Chilton's or Haynes manual will detail the procedure for changing the belt itself, and how to get the timing right when you do.

It is terribly important, of course, that the cam shaft and crank shaft pulleys remain in precisely the same relationship to one another that they are now in. If one rotates even a tooth out of the current relationship they car will run very poorly, if at all. Fortunately, Hondas are what are called %26quot;non-interference%26quot; engines, which means that even with a valve fully extended it can never get low enough to strike a piston when it is at the top of its range. Accordingly, if you get it wrong the worst that happens is that your car either will not run, or will run badly, but no internal damage to the valves or pistons will result. and then you will have to go back and recheck your timing marks.

On most cars you will have to remove the old belt before you can put the new one on, and so you will have to refer to the manual for aligning the timing marks. However, sometimes there is just enough room on the cam and crank pulleys to push the belt to the innner edge and slip on the edge of the new belt on the outer. If so, then timing is assured and one just takes a sharp blade, cuts off the old belt to get it out of the way, and then slides the new belt on the remainder of the way.

Now one other important thing to do is, after the new belt is in place, but before you have put everything else back together, you put a large wrench or socket and rachet on the crank shaft bolt and turn the engine over a few times, just to make sure it turns smoothly to assure that you have assembled it properly. Turning it over slowly will apply far less stress to the system if something is awry than would a starter motor.

Also, do not buy a cheap belt. Get the belt from the dealer. You may pay $15 or $20 more for it, but in that the far greater investment here is your time, as this can take a shade-tree mechanic several hours, it is not worth scrimping on a belt that may fail prematurely.
How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?
    If you have to ask-

It is too hard for you.
How hard is it to replace a timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?
Good luck if you try. i suggest you take it to someone who knows what to do
dont do it without shop manual....just b cause u can turn a wrench doesn't mean u wouldn't mess up timing and ruin engine. the timing belt set up and running engine timimg are 2 different things....
Is it your car? If so...go buy a repair manual for it. $20 and decide for yourself.

When ever I buy a car (used), that's one of the FIRST things I buy for it.
If your car is at the point where you need the timing belt changed, I would suggest bringing it in for service regardless of whether you can do it yourself or not. Events such as this should provide you the excise to get a professional once-over to see if there is anything else near failure as well that you cannot visually inspect by lifting the hood.

This idea may be a bit more expensive then you want, but investing a little money in a 7 year old Honda is an excellent investment as this car could easily run for 15 years if well maintained.
its not too hard. you'll find more frustration in the fact that you have to take a bunch of stuff off the car to be able to get at the belt. they really cram that engine in there.
Changing a timing belt is not excessively difficult. Typcially its getting to it that's the most difficult. Especially how they pack the engines into the vehicles these days.

The other important thing is making sure everything is properly re-assembled before starting the engine. This especially means making sure the timing is correct before re-assembling everything. If the timing is off by even one tooth, you could have pistons hitting valves and requiring major engine repair.

To answer all your little questions:

Typically a timing belt replacement does not need any %26quot;weird%26quot; tools. You'll need a good pry bar and a breaker bar to remove the bolt typically attached to the harmonic balancer (the hardest part to remove). If you have an air gun, it would probably be the best.

It would definitely be easier to pay someone to do it, but it's not an impossible job for someone who is mechanically inclined and if it's your first time, give yourself at least the weekend to get the job done.
If you know how to follow instructions you can do anything, don't be scare to do anything if you know you can do it. To change a timing belt is easy. Go to Auto Zone and buy the Book of the year and model of your car. Them read it very carefully. Honda have a tensioner pulley that lose the belt. You maybe need help of someone to hold the tensioner when they pull it when you change the belt. If the socket handle is short, look for a long iron tube put it in the handle to help you to pulled. is easier that way. I am a woman and I did change the water pump of my Honda Accord of 2004. including put new belt. I did follow the book instructions and it work. Honda wanted $878.00 to do it for me. Hell no!!! I said.

I went to Auto Zone and to do it my self it cost me just $85.95. Whoa!!! True.

Also don't be shy of asking for help to people that work in garages, ask them where is located the tensioner. if you don't know where. and ask them to show you. some people are nice and can tell you how.

Don't be afraid but always take pictures before you start your job so you can remember how to put it back if you don't know how. Follow book instructions as well.

    Good luck!!!

Timing belt: how long can it wait? 2004 kia rio?

I have a 2004 kia rio with 68,000 miles on it. I don't know much about cars and just recently heard that changing the timing belt is a big deal. I've never done it since i've had the car, and i've heard it needs to be done every 60,000 miles or so. My problem is how to pay for it. I'm a single working dad that got hit hard by the economy and won't be starting a new job until late october. So the earliest i could afford to change the timing belt is the beginning of november. Will i be okay? Could i conceivably wait until about 70,000 miles without having to worry about selling stuff around the house to pay for it asap? I only drive 1,000 miles a month, so by the time i could afford it it would be at 70,000Timing belt: how long can it wait? 2004 kia rio?Your taking your chances yes, the good side is be nice to the vehicle. No stomping on the throttle and baby it until you can perform the necessary repairs. I don't know where you are located, but here in Calif. they use the less sever application guide of 90,000 miles. The difference is we don't have the sever freezing conditions and icing. Check with your dealer for the recommended time table for your application. Good Luck
Timing belt: how long can it wait? 2004 kia rio?
You can wait and have it changed. Just be sure to keep current on basic maintenance. It should be ok until 70,000, just baby it and don't ride it hard.
Timing belt: how long can it wait? 2004 kia rio?
Well keep in mind its not just your timing belt, you should also do the water pump/tensioners etc. every 60k soild. Otherwise what we call %26quot;Catastrophic engine damage%26quot; can occur.%26quot; Perfect example.

Today On my way home I pulled over for a broke down 98' Dodge Neon. Just had her alternator belt replaced didn't know anything about the car. Snapped her timing belt, because she didn't do proper scheduled maintenance. She has 98k on her motor
it isnt a very expensive fix but if it breaks then your timing will be off and even worse your pistons will bend your valves which will result in you rebuilding your whole top end.
don't worry economy is rough for everyone and your timing belt can wait. you don't drive it a lot so there's no problem and the 60,000 mile mark is recommended not mandatory. do change it when you can but for now you'll be fine. and also check the maintenance table for your vehicle all cars are different. mine for example, is recommended at 96,000. but just dont drive it hard.
they will usually last to around the 80,000 miles as long as you drive it normally it should last you a while yet.
Ok, conceviabily, yes you can. 70,000 miles is not too terrible. Does Kia call for it to be done at 60k? Basicly, your timing belt keeps your valves in time with your pistons. If it breaks, you could bend valves in the cylinder head, and morepossible damage. So what this means to you is if it breaks, the mechanic will have to remove the cylinder head, replace the bent valves (or in some cases if there is a lot of damage, the cylinder head), and then replace the belt you should have done. So if that happens, worst case scenario, you are talking a couple thousand in parts and labor. But 70k should be fine. That all depends on when the belt needs to be replaced. Check the owner's manual or call the kia dealership. They will tell you. It might be 90k on that car. And if youneed to get it done cheaper than what the dealer or a shop would charge, Then I suggest asking a mechanic if they can do the job at your house or theirs. I used to sell timing belt jobs out the back door when I worked for a dealer. Parts should be a new belt, water pump, and coolant. You should also change the drive belts too since they have to come off anyways. Parts would be about 100 and I charged 200 to do it outside of work on a saturday. A lot cheaper than the 1000 my shop charged, and yes I made a lot more money to do the job too. Hope this helps.

    Rough Estimates
    Timing Belt on Ford Focus?
B-O-B gave you the best answer for your problem.
    Timing Belt on Ford Focus?
yep B O B did good and if the timing belt is close to the change time frame as the dealer or ur book said then get it change you wont like what could happen if it breaks then the engine is running it will be cheaper to fix it now then after it breaks you could end up paying a lot more money.
pretty sure the timing belt belt is not going to cost that much. the shocks might be. but the belt probably not.

unless if that was with labor included.
the total price of the repair bill will depend on many things because if the car's timing belt is broken there is the possibility that the valaes have bent if that is the case you will also need a machine shop that can straighten them back out if none are available in your area then you will need new ones

in my case a mouse had chewed the belt and the insurance paid for the entire bill minus my deductible and there was a machine shop nearby who repaired my valves

my deductible and insurance paid a total of

    $1,457.73

hope you have better luck than me

    Timing Belt replacement cost?

    Hi,

I went did a regular car service (Minor). Thought it's going be a easy service which won't take long... and then he called and told me i need to get my %26quot;Timing Belt%26quot; changed...

He said it's quite important and urgent, so i asked him for the quote... and it was $850 including labor, so i said i might have a think about it for now.

So i went online and browse around and saw most of the timing belt cost about AUD$100+- which is far far away from the quote? Would the other $750 be labor...?!?!?

Can someone tell me was the quote over priced? or that's the standard charge? Also i live near Sydney City, if anyone could suggest any other places i can change my timing belt with a lower cost that would be greatly appreciated!!! Also how much would it normally cost to replace a new timing belt? Do i really need to change it? How do i know when i need to change it?

    PS: I've got a 1998 Toyota Camery (140,000 km)

Cheers!Timing Belt replacement cost?Timing belts are very important. They control the valves in relation to the pistons in your engine. If the timing belt should break the pistons can run into the valves which would break your engine in ways that would be VERY expense We are talking Replacement cost of 2000-3500 USD. Your car has about twice the mileage on it that timing belts should be replaced. The estimate that you have seems reasonable
    Timing Belt replacement cost?
You were probably looking at estimates for accessory drive belts (alternator, a/c compressor and power steering pump) You need your timing belt replaced which is a totally different belt, it keeps internal parts of your engine at the right place at the right time (valve timing)....if it breaks, your car will not run. $850 seems about right depending on the motor (2.2L or the v6) and also if they are replacing the water pump, idler, and tentioner pulleys, and the oil seals (cam, crank, and oil pump) at the same time which is always a good idea.

    Good luck!
    Timing Belt replacement cost?
I would get a quote from the Toyota dealer to compare and make note of all the other services it includes. Often times (but not always) the shops that give you better deals are often leaving out other things that should be replaced/repaired with the timing belt and may cut corners.
They will charge labour + consumables (coolent, oil, grease ect.) + parts that you prob dont need but by the book needs to be done also. So yes you are gettin ripped off. The place i worked charged around about 350 to change a timing belt and 500 for timing chain becoz theres a little more involved. Shop around or find someone whose handy.

How much does it cost to maintain a Ferrari in Malaysia? Specifically a F355. I need some figures to work with

I'm seriously thinking about buying a 1995 F355 GTS. Everyone says it's expensive to maintain one, but nobody can quote me figures. Timing belt changes cost? Once in 2 years or 3 years? How much? Part costs? Reliability? Service centres in Klang Valley? Official service centres or are there 3rd party workshops? How much does it cost to maintain a Ferrari in Malaysia? Specifically a F355. I need some figures to work withif you have to ask you cannot afford it... plan and simple....

If you have to ask how much its going to cost to maintain a Ferrari, the I'm telling you, its too much car for you.. First its a 12 year old vehicle, and an expensive one at that, YOu ahve to find the best service department to even first think of turning a wrench on your vehicle. And then open the check book.. You'r going to need a large checkbook just for basic maintenance if you want to own a vehicle like this...
Make sure you have plenty of money there! Without knowing what your income, how can anyonme tell how much this will cost? I guess what I am saying is that to som people, this would be expensive, but if you have a surplus of income.. Well.. go for it!

  • Anyone ever have a timing belt break on a 2004 1.6L KIA engine?

My brother has a 2004 Kia Rio with a 1.6L Mi-Tech engine. He has somewhere between 80k-90k miles on it. He knew it said to change the timing belt at 60k. Well he didn't... and I have already told him he was dumb so please spare me your insults.

Ok here is my question and I only want answers from people who have experienced a broken timing belt on a 1.6L kia engine.

Does it damage the valves and/or pistons?

The above was my question, the following is optional reading if anyone cares about details.

I have called several Kia dealers and these are the responses I got.

    2 said yes

    1 said %26quot;Kia tells us it is an interference engine, but I never had one come in that was broken so I don't know for sure%26quot;

    another one said %26quot;NO, not on the 4 cylinder engines%26quot;

I know quite a bit about cars, but I have never changed a timing belt on a Kia before.

Here are the facts and what I have read.

Someone on the internet stated they had a 2004 Kia Rio and the timing belt broke and they got it replaced and the car runs fine. But that was pretty much what they wrote no other details about what else was broke or what else was fixed.

I have read many posts that imply the valves break and damage the pistons, but none were on the same year or the same engine. But everyone of those posts said they knew there was damage because they either heard it or the motor was locked.

My Brother's car spins over very fast and smoothly just like a non-interference engine does when the belt breaks.

He was in a residential area driving about 25mph when it broke so he was probably turning somewhere around 2000rpms.

People have asked how fast the motor was turning when the belt broke I really don't understand why that even matters. it is either an interference engine or it is not right?

If the chain snaps on a bicycle the travel of the pedals are still limited to what they were before the chain broke reguardless of how fast you are pedaling. So I really don't see the difference in 600rpms and 4000rpms if it will cause damage it will cause damage at idle too, but I do understand the faster it is going the harder things will slam, so it may cause more damage, like valves breaking completely off and getting jammed in pistons and bending rods, etc...

So yeah. Anyone who has had a timing belt actually break on a kia 1.6L preferably a 2004 rio please let me know what the damage was if any.

And if you did anything more than change the belt did you do it as a precaution because it was recommended or did you do it because it was actually needed?Anyone ever have a timing belt break on a 2004 1.6L KIA engine? Many Japanese and other engines are interference fit engines. The best thing to do is to change your timing belt and hope for the best. Once it is changed and a problem appears, you can easily remove the head and other things to repair the problem. Kia engines are more like Toyota engines. They do NOT have interference fit engines (in most of them, anyway). If there is any damage, it is usually valves that bend and need replacing. Good Luck!!
Anyone ever have a timing belt break on a 2004 1.6L KIA engine?
certain engines if the timing belt breaks it can bent some of the valves but some dont so if you try turn the engine over and it is jamed your valves are bent if the engine still turns over then just get the timing belt done and it will be fine
